Sewn booklet in yellow wrappers printed in black and with a vignette in black on the front wrapper that repeats the internal engraving of the Otaheitans from the island of Otaheite in the Pacific Ocean. Wrappers soiled, spine rubbed, a few dings around the edges, one inch hole on the rear wrapper and several black stains there, all illustrations in near fine condition, sewing intact, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Rufus Merrill (1803-1891) was an American author and publisher from Concord, New Hampshire, known primarily for his contributions to children's literature during the 19th century. Softcover, bound in pictorial peach wraps illustrated with a vignette framed by a vine covered trellis on the front cover. The covers are slightly soiled with minor staining to the rear cover. 16 pages, with numerous illustrations by Harrison Eastman engraved by J. Augustus Bogert. There is some staining throughout, particularly to pages 8 & 9. Very good. The illustrator Harrison Eastman (1822-1891) was an American artist, engraver & illustrator known for his depictions of early California, including scenes portraying Native Americans. Eastman was born in New Hampshire and moved to California in 1849 during the Gold Rush where he achieved recognition for his portrait of James Marshall, the man who discovered gold in California. Eastman contributed wood engravings and lithographs as illustrations for periodicals and his watercolors won first prize at the 1857 San Francisco Mechanics' Institute Fair.…
