In den WarenkorbThe second part of the celebrated series "Theatrum Europaeum"; the 2nd edition (1637); this part was written by Johann Philipp Abelin (1600-1634) and Johann flittner. Abelin's parts (1 and 2) are considered the best although these books are especially famous for their copper engravings by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650). T…his copy contains no large plates and maps (60 engravings are listed in the book), only the frontispiece and (all) 50 copper engravings in the text (mostly portraits of rulers or commanders, but also battle scenes etc.). Pages are also decorated with headpieces, tailpieces and initials; the title page has a copper engraving as a vignette/cut. /// Leather binding with raised bands (20th century); hardback, [6]+697+[21] pp., 1 plate, 4° (21 x 32 cm), leather as new, front endpaper has bookplate, frontispiece worn, yellowed and slightly waterstained (however, all tiny chips and tears skilfully fixed by bookbinder), cca 30 leaves (including title leaf) waterstained, many other leaves slightly waterstained (they usually have one small stain), all pages yellowed or, in many cases, tanned, some pages foxed, all chips and tears skilfully fixed by bookbinder, pages rarely have small ink stains or dark spots, frontispiece has a few tiny bookworm traces, condition: good Book Language/s: German.

Original printed wrappers. = A very interesting and rare publication by the Swiss geologist, naturalist and politician Peter Merian (1795-1883). It contains a fine geological and geographical hand-colou…red map titled "Geognostische Karte des Kantons Basel und einiger angrenzenden Gegenden". The second plate shows cross sections. Ward and Carozzi list this work as the first volume of the Beiträge zur Geognosie. Indeed this is part one of a "series", dealing with Basel and its surroundings. The other, second and - apparently - last volume, was published 11 years later [1832], and titled Geognostische Uebersicht des südlichen Schwarzwaldes. It deals with an adjacent region in Germany. Both works are rare. An incomplete copy of this second work (lacking the map and rear wrapper) has been added, but not valued. Fore edge uncut. Both works with the same tiny old signature "E. v. Herder" on the front wrappers' top margins. This may be Emil [Ernst] von Helder (1785-1855), Königlich-Bayerischer Forst- und Regierungsrat, son of the famous philosopher and friend of Goethe, Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803) and father of the botanical professor Ferdinand Gottfried von Herder (1828-1896). Spine split, otherwise in very good condition, with clean plate and map. Ward and Carozzi, 1542.

She sailed with her daughter Dorothea on June 1699 from Amsterdam, and remained in Surinam until 1701. Her work, first published in 1705, 'gave an unprecedented glimpse of the teeming insect life of tropical South America, with gorgeous butterflies flying around luxuriant flowering or fruiting plants and with large many-coloured caterpillars crawling over the leaves. [The plates] have earned Maria Merian an honoured place in the history of tropical entomology as also in botanical illustration' (W.T.
