Engraving and etching on hand laid paper, sheet size 312 x 191 mm., platemark 177 x 127 mm. Made by Matthäus Merian the Elder, and published by his heirs in: Schleder, J.G. Theatrum Europaeum. Frankfurt am Main: Merian, 1652. Vol. 6, p. 921. Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt, Germany for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house. He was a member of the patrician Basel Merian family. In very good condition, ample margins. Some offsetting of letterpress on the opposite page (when this was still in it's book). Some small creases in the margin edges, lower margin lightly soiled (well outside image area). References: Wütrich (Das druckgraphische Werk von Matthaeus Merian d. AE.) vol. 3, p. 113.

Map. Original engraving. Measures 13 3/4" x 17 1/4" Beautifully engraved view of the Dutch siege of Olinda and Recife in 1630, depicting a naval fleet off the coast of Pernambuco, with the fortified settlement at Olinda rendered in detail. A numbered index in the lower right corner identifies several major sites. An inset in the upper left features a map of the Brazilian coast extending from San Salvador to Touros, centered on Pernambuco where the battle takes place. The seige resulted in the Dutch gaining control of Recife from Portugal, and the establishment of Dutch Brazil. The Portuguese successfully recaptured Recife in 1654, the year before this map was published. This map is in good condition, with margins slightly cropped and wear to edges. Centerfold as issued. Three small wormholes near top and bottom edges of centerfold and minimal scattered stains. Theodor de Bry (1528-1595) was a German engraver and book dealer. He produced illustrations of European and international cities which he both visited and imagined visiting, publishing them with maps and atlases by fellow engravers. After his death, his family compiled the images into two series, the Grand Voyages and the Petit Voyages. The Swiss-born Matthaus Merian (1593-1650) studied in Zurich and Paris before moving to Frankfurt, where he worked as an engraver, etcher and publisher.
