Première édition de la traduction française de ce mémoire capital, revu par l'auteur. Il occupe les pages 691 à 737 de ce très rare fascicule (de juillet 1879) du "Moniteur scientifique" de Quesneville," journal des sciences pures et appliquées" ; (ce mémoire a également fait l'objet la même année d'un tirage à part, à pagination séparée, devenu rarissime). On trouve en tête une très importante lettre de Mendeleïev à Quesneville (de 2 pages ½), en édition originale ; Mendeleïev analyse sa théorie à la lumière des recherches les plus récentes. Il y écrit notamment : "La loi périodique a donné la première possibilité de prédire non-seulement l'existence d'éléments encore inconnus, mais aussi de déterminer les propriétés chimiques et physiques des corps simples encore à découvrir et celles de leurs combinaisons." Le classement périodique a été "une conquête scientifique extrêmement importante et féconde" (Marie Curie). Cf. The first is the 'Seance du Lundi 20 Septembre 1875.' Cover page and pages numbered 486-508. This is the complete record of that September meeting, including most importantly: "Chimie - Caracteres chimiques et spectroscopiques d'un nouveau metal, le Gallium, decouvery dans un blende de lay mine de Pierrefitte, vallee d'Argeles (Pyrenees). Note de M. Lecoq de Boisbaudran, presentee par M. Wurtz." In this 2.5 page article, Lecoq describes the discovery of the element that he named Gallium. NEXT: Comptes Rendus. de l'Academie des Sciences. 22 Novembre 1875. Pages 910-992. The notes of this meeting contain 'Remarques a propos de la devouverte du gallium; par M.D. Mendeleeff.' On pages 969-972 Mendeleeff writes about his prediction of the existence of gallium and the construction of his Periodic Table of the Elements. Mendeleeff (Mendelev) had constructed the Periodic Table in the 1860's, but it was not commonly accepted. Nevertheless, his innovation was to speculate that the gaps in the chart of elements were undiscovered elements. The discovery of gallium proved his prediction to be accurate. This article, published just months after Lecoq's discovery, acknowledges the discovery and shows how the actual material, which Mendelev had called eka-aluminium, met his predictions. The discovery of gallium in accordance with Mendelev's prediction established the importance and correctness of the Periodic Table, establishing it as the framework for organizing the elements that is still in use today. These seem to be removed from larger volume(s). Spines have remains of paper and glue and cords. Each remains firmly glued, but there are no covers or endpapers. Each is a complete 'issue', containing other letters, notices, and articles. These two are paired because of the Gallium/Mendeleeff/Lecoq articles. Measures 8.25 x 10 inches.
