Première édition de la traduction française de ce mémoire capital, revu par l'auteur. Il occupe les pages 691 à 737 de ce très rare fascicule (de juillet 1879) du "Moniteur scientifique" de Quesneville," journal des sciences pures et appliquées" ; (ce mémoire a également fait l'objet la même année d'un tirage à part, à pagination séparée, devenu rarissime). On trouve en tête une très importante lettre de Mendeleïev à Quesneville (de 2 pages ½), en édition originale ; Mendeleïev analyse sa théorie à la lumière des recherches les plus récentes. Il y écrit notamment : "La loi périodique a donné la première possibilité de prédire non-seulement l'existence d'éléments encore inconnus, mais aussi de déterminer les propriétés chimiques et physiques des corps simples encore à découvrir et celles de leurs combinaisons." Le classement périodique a été "une conquête scientifique extrêmement importante et féconde" (Marie Curie). Cf.
