In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. Kapp [Edmond X. Kapp] [colour frontispiece] (illustrator). First Edition in English. First impression of the first edition in English. With six plates from drawings by George Grosz. The plates were printed at the Curwen Press. Translated from the German "Hinkemann" by Vera Mendel. The tragedy of "Hinkemann" was written in 1921/22 in the Prison-Fortress of Niederschönfeld. ***Near fine in Batik-style paper over boards with the original paper label to the front board. The label is clean and undamaged. Boards clean and only slightly worn with age and handling. The wear is mainly to the head and tail of the spine and corners, but there are no tears or damage. There is just very slight splitting to the fragile paper covering on the spine. Internally also near fine, with clean unmarked pages - no foxing and no inscriptions. The paper used is nice quality rag paper. The illustrations are also completely clean. Some of the pages are still uncut at the top edge (pp 9-16, 37-40). These could be cut open carefully if so wished. Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***236mm x 190mm. 50 pages. ***Ernst Toller (1 Dec 1893 - 22 May 1939) was a German author, playwright, left-wing politician and revolutionary, known for his Expressionist plays. He served in 1919 for six days as President of the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, after which he became the head of its army. He was imprisoned for five years for his part in the armed resistance by the Bavarian Soviet Republic to the central government in Berlin. While in prison Toller wrote several plays that gained him international renown. They have performed in London and New York as well as in Berlin. In 1933 Toller was exiled from Germany after the Nazis came to power. He did a lecture tour in 1936 - 1937 in the United States and Canada, settling in California for a while before going to New York. He joined other exiles there. He committed suicide in May 1939.' ***'George Grosz (Jul 26, 1893 - Jul 6, 1959) was a German artist known especially for his caricatural drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. He was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity groups during the Weimar Republic. He emigrated to the United States in 1933, and became a naturalized citizen in 1938. Abandoning the style and subject matter of his earlier work, he exhibited regularly and taught for many years at the Art Students League of New York. In 1959 he returned to Berlin, where he died shortly afterwards. [Wiki] ***A first impression of the true first edition in English, in the attractive pre-war binding of batik paper over fragile boards. ***Of interest to collectors of Ernst Toller first edition titles. Of additional interest are the evocative drawings by Georg Grosz. Uncommon, especially in such well-preserved condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
