It begins in 1930, when, full of high expectations, the author and her husband, as newly weds, left their native America and eagerly embarked on an exhilarating journey that would take them to Austria, where they were to become candidates at the Psychoanalytic Institute. As Esther began her analysis with Anna Freud herself, and her husband, Bill, began his analysis with the beautiful and renowned Helene Deutsch, they were surprised by the contrast between the ambitious aims of psychoanalytic theory and its rigid practice. Even more baffling was the behavior of analysts so intent on defending their controversial theories that they sometimes tried to mold their subjects' self-interpretations with strict Freudian concepts. If their classes were not what they had anticipated, the Menakers were further surprised by Viennese social relations. Expecting to find a free and uninhibited new way of life, the young couple was shocked and disillusioned to find an inflexible set of norms reminiscent of the Victorian era-the very situation they had hoped to leave behind them.
