Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original 1931 publication and not a modern reprint. Gray cloth boards with black text on front and spine. Exterior shows spotting and soiling, edges and corners show bumps/wear. Spine is also mildly sunned. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. The front pastedown contains a pasted in note which has left a shadow on the opposite end page which also has "R.A. Montes de Oca" penned along the top edge. No other handwriting found in the book. Pages are tones due to age and the pages do have a slight wave to them. This appears to be the way the book was bound. The edge bump that can be seen on the image showing the rear board is also on a few of the interior pages. The book contains numerous fold outs showing engine architecture as well as numerous charts and graphs and other illustrations and photographs.…

Treatise on the principles of advanced warfare written as memoranda for Austrian generals by their commander-in-chief, the Archduke Charles (1771-1848), who initiated far-reaching army reforms in line with the changes in warfare learnt from experiences of the early Napoleonic campaigns. The author, one of the best allied strategists, inflicted the first defeat on Napoleon in the battle of Aspern-Esslingen. The work is divided into three parts: 1) on offensive and defensive wars, fortresses and winter campaigns; 2) on the formation of arsenals, marching orders, tactical defensive positions, the defence and the crossing of rivers, and winter quarters; 3) on the protection of supply lines by convoys, skirmishing, the Turkish wars, and the changes in warfare brought about as a result of the Napoleonic campaigns. The author concludes that the first principle of war is an accurate assessment of available means to achieve the desired ends. The surest method of gaining victory is choosing the right moment to deploy the largest number of available forces to achieve the highest degree of effectiveness. Revised edition of Western Powers, updated from the 1958 briefing, including a length section on the "British position in the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf", framing six decades of British foreign policy within the context of Lord Curzon's 1899 analysis of the Gulf. "This memorandum had its origin in the need to put together for immediate use during the summer of 1958 documents and statements relating to the latest of the recurring crises in the Middle East". It outlines treaty commitments to different Gulf states and provides a documentary chronology of Britain's diplomatic relationships.
