Distributed by International News Photos with their pictorial stamp on the verso. The photograph is slightly soiled and there is a slight crease to the bottom right corner.A press release serving as caption for the photograph is mechanically reproduced in type on a sheet of paper mounted from the verso. The text of the press release reads as follows: "SILVER ANNIVERSARY / NEW YORK.Lauritz Melchior, world-famous operatic tenor, and his wife, a former European actress, are pictured as they celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary at a New York restaurant recently. (V)12-18-50".The Danish-born American heldentenor Lauritz Melchior (1890-1973), sang on most of the great Opera stages of the world. He gave over 500 performances of Wagnerian roles at the Metropolitan Opera from 1926-1950. He further sang in 5 Hollywood films for MGM and Paramount and his hand and foot prints were immortalized in cement in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

8vo. 1 p. Eigenhändige Postkarte mit Unterschrift. Lauritz Lebrecht Hommel Melchior war ein dänischer Heldentenor und gilt neben Max Lorenz als der größte Wagner-Tenor der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Seine Karriere als Wagner-Interpret begann am 14. Mai 1924 in Covent Garden in London in der Rolle des Siegmund in der Walküre. Noch im selben Jahr trat er erstmals bei den Bayreuther Festspielen auf, ein Jahr später debütierte er an der Wiener Staatsoper. Am 17. Februar 1926 begann mit einem triumphalen Tannhäuser Melchiors Karriere an der Met in New York, der er bis zum 2. Februar 1950 die Treue hielt. Er war mit Siegfried Wagner befreundet, für den er von 1924 bis zu dessen Tod 1930 alle großen Tenor-Partien mit Ausnahme des Lohengrin sang. Mit Kirsten Flagstad bildete er das beste Tristan und Isolde-Paar der 1930er Jahre.

Danish-American operatic tenor Lauritz Melchior (1890-1973) signed this brief, friendly note to a fan which reads in part: "Just a short line to thank you very much for your kind birthday greetings which made me very happy. I had a wonderful birthday, and when you reach my age, each birthday is a very special one." The letter is dated March 25, 1972 and Melchior died less than a year later. Melchior was the preeminent Wagnerian tenor of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s and has come to be considered the quintessence of his voice type. Typed on a Hallmark thank you card that measures 7" x 5".  Condition: The note was stored in one of those ubiquitous "sticky" page photo albums leaving tidy, vertical stripes of glue residue on the verso. Overall good condition with a large, neat signature. Signed by Author(s).
