Front board weakened and has been restrengthened with glue. Wolfgang Kurt Hermann "Pief" Panofsky (April 24, 1919 - September 24, 2007), was a German-American physicist who won many awards including the National Medal of Science. From 1945 to 1951, Panofsky held an assistant and then associate professorship at the University of California, Berkeley, before permanently establishing himself as Professor of Physics at Stanford University. Between 1961 and 1984, he was the director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and continued to serve as director emeritus. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Arms Control Association from 1996 until 1999 and remained a director emeritus until his death. Panofsky was a member of the Board of Sponsors of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and won the Matteucci Medal in 1996 for his fundamental contributions to physics. He was also a recipient of the National Medal of Science, the Franklin Medal (1970), the Ernest O. Lawrence Medal, the Leo Szilard Award and the Enrico Fermi Award. During his college days, Panofsky was called "Pief" by fellow students who found his full name unpronounceable. The childhood nickname seemed to suit the ebullient physicist, and it stayed with him throughout his long life. His elder brother, Hans A. Panofsky, was "an atmospheric scientist who taught at Pennsylvania State University for 30 years and who was credited with several advances in the study of meteorology". Melba Newell Phillips (February 1, 1907 - November 8, 2004) was an American physicist and science educator. She completed her doctoral studies under J. Robert Oppenheimer and was also known for refusing to testify before a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on internal security, leading to her dismissal by Brooklyn College. While unemployed, Phillips wrote two textbooks, Principles of Physical Science (1957), with Francis Bonner, and Classical Electricity and Magnetism (1955), with Wolfgang Panofsky. Phillips returned to teaching in 1957. In 1962 she took up a position at the University of Chicago and under her guidance the university began teaching physical science courses to non-science majors. She retired from the University in 1972. She was active in the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) throughout her career. She was also an elected fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1981, the AAPT established the Melba Newell Phillips Medal, which is presented to AAPT leaders who have provided creative leadership and dedicated service that resulted in exceptional contributions to AAPT. Compact and precise, this text offers advanced undergraduates and graduate students a diverse selection of topics: the electrostatic field in vacuum; general methods for the solution of potential problems; radiation reaction and covariant formulation of the conservation laws of electrodynamics; and numerous other subjects. This book is designed to emphasize those aspects of classical electricity and magnetism most useful to the modern student as a background both for experimental physics and for the quantum theory of matter and radiation.…
