Early issue of this little magazine/mimeo style work exploring counterculture and social movement/justice subjects, very similar to the many underground newspapers published at the time, but perhaps in magazine form similar to something mainstream like Time. Many of the articles are anti-war in nature, although a few muse on the more spiritual side of the counterculture movement of the 1960s, like Mel Lyman's (leader of the Fort Hill commune/cult) essay on the New Age. GOOD condition. Minor general toning, a bit heavier to the reverse. Some soiling and minor staining to the covers. Staples rusted.…

Approximately 17 ½ by 11 ¾ inches. 28 pp. Illustrations throughout, including photos of Mel Lyman and other presumed members of his group (including a centerfold photo). Boston based underground newspaper. Avatar was founded in 1967 by Mel Lyman and his followers at the Fort Hill Community, or Lyman Family, a counterculture commune (or cult, depending on perspective) in the Roxbury area of Boston. Besides publishing the usual counterculture perspective on local and national news, the newspaper also served as a mouthpiece for Lyman's and the Fort Hill Community's philosophy: a quasi-religious and mystical thought drawing on Lyman's unique view of astrological, spiritual and occult history. Mel Lyman originally gained fame as a folk musician. Many columns espousing the views of Mel Lyman, letters, astrology etc. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. General toning and minor soiling. Moderate toning along the fold. Minor wrinkling and creasing, including a larger crease/fold at the lower right corner. Several small tears along the extremities.…

My Hustler stars Ed Hood, and Paul America as the titular blonde hustler, with appearances by Joseph Campbell, Genevieve Charbin, and Dorothy Dean. Directed by Andy Warhol and Chuck Wein, with Paul Morrissey as camera and audio operator, the film was shot over Labor Day Weekend 1965 on Fire Island. The first Warhol film that Morrissey worked on, the film utilized camera movement and sound synchronization, techniques Warhol had never used in his films. My Hustler premiered in January 1966 at the Film-makersâ Cinematheque in New York and showed in Boston in February 1967 with Beauty no.2 - with Edie Sedgwick and Gino Piserchio. …
