Large engraved ticket, 185 x 230 mm. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. "1807 Friedland" was Meissonier's most ambitious painting taking nearly 15 years to complete and portrayed one of Napoleon's greatest victories. It was bought sight unseen by the… American department store magnate Alexander T. Stewart for the enormous sum of $60,000 in 1876. It was subsequently sold at his widow's estate sale in 1887 to Henry Hilton for $66,000. Hilton donated it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), where it remains. However The Met records that in 1888, to aid in the reproduction of the picture, Meissonier revisited it in a slightly larger watercolour version. It is likely this version which is on display here. This version was etched by Jules Jacquet in 1890.
