Brutale Gewalt, sadistische Quälerei, von Todesröcheln und Angstgeschrei untermalt - wer, um Himmels willen, schaut sich so etwas an und gibt dafür noch Geld aus? fragte verständnislos die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Und ,Die Zeit schrieb warnend: Das römische Weltreich zerfiel, seit es Gewalt nicht mehr allein gegen die Unterworfenen übte, sondern sie den eigenen Bürgern als ergötzliches Spektakel vorführte.
