Rare German edition of Ludovico de Varthema's Itinerario, the sensationally popular and highly influential travel account of his seven-year of journey through Arabia, Syria, Ethiopia, Persia, India, and the East Indies. "Unlike most of the commentators of the sixteenth century, Varthema went to the East over the land routes of the Levant, learned colloquial Arabic, and acknowledged Islam. He apparently left Venice for Egypt and Syria around 1502, arrived at Cambay in India around October 10, 1504, and then journeyed inland and southward to Vijayanagar, and finally wound up in Calicut [Kozhikode] at the beginning of 1505. He then proceeded southward, rounded Cape Comorin [Kanyakumari] by sea and perhaps then traveled northward along the eastern coast of India." (Lach). Like his fellow Italians and the Portuguese, Varthema eagerly sought information about the Eastern trade in the wake of the Turkish victory at Constantinople. "Most of what Europe in general learned about the East during the first half of the sixteenth century," as Lach notes, "related to the spice trade." Before reaching the Spiceries, however, Varthema passed through the Arabian peninsula. After his arrival in Damascus in April 1503 he joined the Mameluke garrison and then journeyed to Khaybar, Medina, and Mecca. The first European to visit Islam's two holiest cities, Vartherma offers a detailed description of the hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. It appears that Varthema had at least some knowledge of Muslim prayers and rites. "His description of the hajj was judged correct by Richard Francis Burton, which suggests that Varthema actually participated in it. The description of the interior of Yemen, which he was probably the first European to visit, is confirmed by that made more than two centuries later by Carsten Niebuhr's Beschreibung von Arabien (Copenhagen, 1772). Therefore Varthema's reliability in the parts of the Itinerario that concern the Arabian Peninsula is not contested" (DBI). His general description of the Hejaz, the western coast of Arabia on the Red Sea, which includes Mecca and Medina, is highly valued as an important source which predates the Ottoman occupation of this region. Varthema also provides the first eye-witness account by a western traveller of the Arabian Gulf region. Our 1608 edition contains complete maps of the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf, each of which identifies Qatar as "Catura." Continuing south, Varthema visited Cambay in 1504. This city on the northwest coast of India receives an especially detailed description in the Itinerario. Vijayanagar, the chief city of a late medieval Hindu empire and the economic and cultural center of south India in the early sixteenth century, is described by Varthema as "a second paradise." Pulicat is noted as an entrepôt in the trade with Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Like most travel accounts of the early sixteenth century, the Itinerario describes Kozhikode and the M.

Ferner finden sich dann noch kleine Ergänzungen und Notizen im Rand in Bleistift wohl um 1900. - Etwas gebräunt, Einband beschabt und spröde, Gelenk vorne etwas rissig aber solide. First German edition, published in the same year as the Latin one: an index of all days of the…year, arranged in the manner of a calendar of saints, designating for each the birthdays, days of death, or other memorial days of the Habsburgs. This is one of Megiser's several experiments revolving around Habsburgian genealogy. "Die Arbeiten eines Laz und Cuspinian darüber waren ihm bekannt; seine Darstellungen im Diarium Austriacum (1614) [.] lehnen sich an den vorsichtigeren Guillimannus und den Niederländer Pontus Henterus (+ 1602) an" (Doblinger, S. 455). - Dedicated to the wife of Emperor Matthias, the Empress Anna of Austria-Tyrol (1585-1618), founder of Vienna's Capuchin monastery and of the Capuchin Crypt. The Swabian-born polymath Megiser (1554-1619) was appointed official historian in Linz by Archduke Charles in 1612; in 1615 he was made historiographer of the Upper Austrian estates. - Covers a little warped; interior shows a slight waterstain throughout the upper margin. Pretty vellum binding with the Imperial arms to both covers. - Title-page has erased contemporary ownership of the old Capuchin monastery in Vienna's St Ulrich quarter (founded in 1600 and closed in 1811) with their handwritten spine label in red and black ink. The foundation work to the history of Carinthia was written largely by M. G. Christalnick (up to 1578), his unpublished manuscript was later edited and extended by Megiser. Title with ownership entry (probably Kommende Mergentheim?) and stamped (Königliche Handbibliothek Württemberg), very slightly browned, altogether very well preserved and in a decorative binding). Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards with roll and medallion stamps, signed and dated "IPD 1619".

Christalnick (1530?-1595) verfassten `Historia Carinthiaca`, einer ersten eingehenden Geschichte Kärntens, von H. Megiser (1554-1619), der das Werk überarbei…tete und bis 1611 fortführte, veranlasst wurde. Der protestantische Prediger und Kärntner Landeshistoriker Christalnick hatte die Chronik 1588 im Auftrag der Kärntner Stände geschrieben. Der Sprachgelehrte und Historiker H. Megiser (1554-1619) war um 1590 in Graz zum Landschaftlichen Geschichtsschreiber, 1603 zum churfürstlich bestellten Historiographen in Leipzig ernannt worden und schließlich 1612 von Erzherzog Karl von Österreich als Geschichtsschreiber nach Linz berufen und 1615 zum `Historicus` der Landschaft erwählt worden. Die fehlende Seite 1795 und deren Rückseite mit Impressum und großer Druckermarke in Holzschnitt liegen in Kopie bei, das unbedruckte Blatt 1717/1718 bedingt keinen Textverlust. - DIESES OBJEKT UNTERLIEGT DER DIFFERENZBESTEUERUNG 4°. Titelbl., S. 957-1794 (Ss. 1717/1718 unbedruckt, S. 1795 fehlt), mit gerahmten Textseiten, breiten Kopfleisten, Zierleisten, Initialen und Schlussvignetten, sowie zahlreichen Wappendarstellungen in Holzschnitt (ab S. 1736 ausschließlich Wappendarstellungen). Pergamentband d. Zeit, Kanten etwas bestoßen, fleckig und beschabt, mit wenigen Wurmgängen, ehemalige Metallschließen fehlen, Rücken restauriert, Vorsatz erneuert.
