Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy. Facing danger, despair, back breaking work and heart breaking loss and loneliness, the women who forged a new life in New Zealand in colonial times have never been celebrated, and their stories, with a few notable exceptions, have not been widely sheared. Best selling historian Megan Hutching has brought together the stories of a dozen women of all walks of life, whose personal tales of triumph and adversity make compelling reading, and whose contribution helped forge the character of contemporary Aotearoa, where their descendants owe their lives, and their lifestyles, to the sacrifices and strength of these women of the late 1800s. Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. A very clean copy with a crease in the front cover. In A Fair Sort of Battering, thirteen New Zealanders tell of their experiences and reactions in the Italian campaign of World War Two. Day-to-day life and major historical events are described from the perspective of members of the army, including the Maori Battalion, engineers, artillery, nurses and Tuis, as well as pilots and sailors. Roberto Rabel's introduction provides a fascinating overview of New Zealand's participation in this hard-fought campaign. In October 1943, the New Zealand Division landed in Italy, and by 14 November the troops had entered the line and engaged the enemy at the Sangro River. They had come straight from the harsh deserts and searing heat of North Africa, only to find themselves fighting a very different war. Beset by snow, sleet and mountainous terrain, the Division fought its way up the east coast of Italy before crossing the Apennines, where the advance came to a halt at Cassino. Three hard-fought battles then took place. Over the next few months, the New Zealanders suffered heavy casualties in vicious street fighting amongst the ruins of the town. After Cassino, they continued up Italy to reach Trieste in April 1945. A Fair Sort of Battering tells.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. A good clean copy with a pen name. The Second World War saw one in 200 of the New Zealand population held in captivity by members of the opposing forces. Of these, most were captured early in the campaign, and most - over 7000 individuals - were army personnel. In addition, over 1001 air crew were captured, along with 63 naval servicemen. "Inside Stories" is a collection of memoirs from just a small fraction of those who were incarcerated. They speak of the dangers of being captured, knowing they could be shot in a random act of violence or revenge. And once they were in the prison camp, there came periods of enforced idleness, punctuated only by the monotonous routine of frequent and prolonged roll calls. Enlisted men were obliged to work, an occupation that carried danger in itself, as factories and fields could come under attack from the Allied forces. At the end of the war, liberation brought further risk through increased Allied activity, trigger-happy guards and an increasingly haphazard food supply. After repatriation, many had to come to terms with feeling that they had not 'done their bit' for the war effort. People interviewed for this book all had different experiences, depending on their captors (Japanese, German, Italian) and individual circumstances, and these unique reports make for fascinating reading. Paperback. Zustand: Good. 272 pages. Light tanning In the dark days of the Second World War after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, New Zealand stood vulnerable and exposed before numbers in the home Army, Navy and A ir Force were built up, and women joined as WAACs and Wrens and WAAFs. Together they guarded New Zealand on land and sea: some tracked approaching airc raft, some monitored signals, some maintained essential equipment. They were sta tioned from the far north to the deep south, and together they were our Last Lin e of Defence. As well as the armed forces, men served in the Home Guard and wome n in the Women's War Service Auxiliary or Women's Land Service. Some people were held in detention camps because of their conscientious objection to the war. Whether it was carrying out top-secret radar work, making sure that the k itchens at Trentham Army camp were kept supplied, or running the first aid stati on at Papakura camp, the men and women in this book give us an insight into the vital backroom tasks so necessary in wartime. These moving and evocativ e stories of a nation at war complete the groundbreaking seven-volume Oral Histo ry series which began with A Unique Sort of Battle: New Zealanders Remember Cret e and which is destined to become a significant part of our cultural record.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 320 pages. B/W platesA comprehensive history of the struggle for women's suffrage in New Zealand, inc luding short biographies of the main people involved. In 1893, wearing white camellias meant you supported women's right to vote - a red camellia in yo ur lapel signalled the opposite. In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the vote, a milestone of which we are justly proud, but it wasn't easily achieved. the struggle was protracted and often bitter. the resolve and strength of the women involved were sorely tested, as their ? ??determination to have equality and the right to vote brought out the worst in their opponents. In LEADING tHE WAY, respected historian Megan Hutching tells the story of this momentous event, including profiles of some of the women w ho brought about such a massive social upheaval by changing the minds and hea rts of the politicians. Among them are names you will recognise, while others wi ll be less well known. they are some of the women who helped our great-grandm others put aside their aprons and become enfranchised citizens of this countr y. their stories are an important part of our history as a socially progressi ve country, and their courage, loyalty and fierce belief in democracy still r esonate today. Megan Hutching's most recent book was OVER tHE WIDE AND tRACKLESS SEA, a history of women pioneers in New Zealand. Author of six books of o ral histories of the Second World War, as part of the 'New Zealanders Remember' series, she has an abiding interest in writing about the extraordinary lives of New Zealand women.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A Unique Sort of Battle New Zealanders Remember Crete By Megan Hutching. SCARCE. Publisher: Harper Collins Publishers Limited, Auckland, 2001. first Edition. Softback in very good condition with no inscriptions, a little shelf/edge wear, creased cover, minor marks. Of all the Second World War battles in which New Zealand troops fought, the Battle of Crete was perhaps the most dramatic. For 12 days in May 1941, a mixed force of New Zealand, British, Australian and American soldiers sought to prevent the island falling to the invading Germans. The defenders were hopelessly outnumbered and had little in the way of arms or munitions Still, they dug in and battled on gamely. Finally, the authorities realised that the island was going to fall, and they ordered the evacuation of thousands of soldiers. Not all could be taken off, and some 2100 New Zealanders remained on Crete, many of whom were taken prisoner of war. This is a collection of oral histories of 15 New Zealanders who were on Crete (including one woman). They each tell of their own experiences of the battle for Crete;the majority were soldiers, but one was a nurse, one a medical assistant, one a sailor on the evacuation ships. Prefaced with an introduction that explains the events that occurred before, during and after the battle for Crete. 254 pages with photos. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand. …
