Fué el libro mas popular de las poblaciones judías en Turquía,desde 1730 hasta época muy reciente, y la que mas ha contribuido a formar el alma sefardí. El título está tomado del Salmo 114,2 en que el salmista dice que la la Casa de Jacob al ser liberada de Egipto salió de un pueblo "bárbaro" (Meam Loez) siendo el significado de bárbaro en este caso, igual al que tenía entre los griegos, es decir, de pueblo que habla un idioma ininteligible (cif. Meg, 17) o no hebreo. A diferencia de la obra de Idish Tsene René (Tzena Ureana) Meam Loez no está destinado principalmente a las mujeres y a personas totalmente incultas, sino que pretende incluso suplementar los estudios de la "yeshivá" sin ser libro erudito propiamente dicho.
