Democratic Senator Samuel McRoberts (1799-1843) represented Illinois in the 27th Congress. This title is a publication of a speech given on June 24-25, 1841 railing against an executive action that McRoberts considered an infringement on free speech rights and vague enough to allow removals from office by the party in power without due process. McRoberts was discussing Whigs, but his words resonate today: ~~"The people voted with that party upon their own principles, and now when they have obtained power by that vote, they turn upon their heel, and showing their habitual contempt of the people, they violate not only their own pledge, but the solemn injunctions which the popular suffrage imposed upon them."~~12pp uncut top edge, not bound and no covers.
