Hardcover. Zustand: Good. ix, [3], 287, [2] pages. Signed with sentiment on fep, With Best Regards T. A. McNeal. From the Author's foreword: "The stories contained in this book have been written at odd times and published in the Daily Capital of Topeka, Kansas. They were continued because the readers of the Capital seemed to enjoy them and asked for more. I received a good many requests that they be put into book form and through the kindness of The Macmillan Company this has been done. The stories present, I think, some pictures of frontier life and frontier characters not found in any other book. I hope the readers of the book will enjoy reading the stories as much s I have enjoyed writing them. If they do I will be more than satisfied." This is a great history book not only for Kansas, but for the "West" in general. Among the topics treated in these stories are: Adobe Walls, comanche, Hillman, Indian Raid, Barbers, Phrenology, Pioneer, Gambler, Murder, Manhunt, Indian Agency, Wichita County, Draw Poker, Cimarron, Jerry Simpson, Dynamite Dave, Carrie Nation, Dennis Flynn, Boston Corbett, Detective, Denver Boggs, Grant Gillette, Dalton Gang, Chester Long, Governor Henry Allen. Thomas Allen McNeal (1853-1942) was a veteran Topeka newspaper editor who had known personally every governor in the history of the state up to the time of his death. One of the state's most widely known newspaper men, a lawyer and author, Mr. McNeal was active in Kansas affairs for more than 60 years. Mr. McNeal was author of several books, including When Kansas Was Young, Fables and Stories by Truthful James. For nearly 48 years, Mr. McNeal was a key man in the Capper Publications, being editor of the Kansas Farmer, The Daily Capitol and a trustee of the Capper Publications, Incorporated. Teller of tall tales about Kansas and Kansans, probably unparalleled during the last half century. Tom McNeal opened his keen wit to hearers in speeches, his newspaper column, books and wherever he attended a gathering of friends. Tho it seemed to many he was always a Kansan, Thomas Allen McNeal was born on a farm in Marion county, Ohio, 14 October 1853. One of the reasons he gave for coming to Kansas was that he hoped the climate would be kindly and encouraging to a man who was becoming bald. Mr. McNeal came to Kansas as a newspaperman, but during his long and colorful career dabbled in politics for himself and for the Republican party, of which he always was an ardent supporter. He joined a brother in Kansas in 1879, buying an interest in the Medicine Lodge Cresset. After editing that paper for several years, he sold his interest and engaged in the practice of law for half a dozen years. In 1885, he was elected to the state legislature, serving three terms in the lower house from Barber county. Then in the early '90s, he was elected mayor of Medicine Lodge. In 1894, Mr. McNeal came to Topeka and started publication of the Kansas Breeze, a weekly newspaper. In its heading was the picture of a lanky Kansan chasing his 10-gallon hat, whiskers streaming in a full-fledged "Kansas Zephyr." The following year he sold his paper to Arthur Capper, owner of the North Topeka Mail. Capper combined them and continued publication under the title Topeka Mail and Breeze, the publication that was to later become the Kansan Farmer. McNeal continued as editor. In 1905 Governor E.W. Hoch appointed McNeal his private secretary. Later in the same administration McNeal resigned to become state printer, holding that office 6 years. From 1915 to 1923 he was a member of the state textbook commission. His wit and bubbling humor kept Mr. McNeal in demand as an after-dinner speaker, and many of his stories have been permanently recorded. He was author of several books, including When Kansas Was Young, Fables and Stories by Truthful James. First Edition, First Printing [stated, Set up and electrotyped. Published September 1922 on verso].…
