A tight and nice first edition of this uncommon speech, with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inside front wrapper is a great content Autograph Letter Signed from McMurtry, 2pp (separate leaves), Harrogate, TN, 4 December 1946. Addressed to budding Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Very good. Two original horizontal folds. On "Lincoln Memorial University" letterheads citing him as director of the Department of Lincolniana, McMurtry pens in bold blue this enthusiastic newcomer to the Lincoln world. In part: "Yesterday I received through the mail your Nancy Hanks manuscript along with your notes and references. I have checked through this material and I find it quite interesting. Not having any word from you I am in doubt just what I am to do with it. I suppose you have completed the final draft and that you are turning this data over to us for our files. We will preserve all of this data and if you should ever want to use it again we will have it here for you. I was really surprised to hear from you as I was under the impression that you had been assigned to foreign duty. I suppose you have returned to the United States for further training. after the War you must come back to Tennessee to delve into some other subject concerning Abraham Lincoln." Boldly signed in full. Gates entered the steel industry as a career, but he did indeed delved into Abraham Lincoln in his free time for the rest of his live -- though this Nancy Hanks project never came to publication. McMurtry (1906-88) was the famed director of the Department of Lincolniana at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, and authored numerous Lincoln studies.
