Hardcover. Neysa McMein (Frontispiece), and Bjorkman, John (W (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. 141, [1] pages. Cover heavily worn, soiled, and rubbed. Front and rear hinges weak. Large fold-out plate of the regiment, approximately 36 inches by 10 inches with multiple folds. This apparently was located at the front of the volume. Illustrations. Some page discoloration noted. This item is included in Dornbusch as 782 in the WWI Engineers section. Included with this volume is a clipping from The American Legion Monthly (1929) showing the dedication of a 'highly unusual war memorial' at Goldendale, Washington modeled after Stonehenge. The Louis Leidl Post was in charge of the dedication. Laid in is a copy of the Memorandum from the Commanding Officer, 23rd Engineers to the Members of the 23rd Regiments dated June 13, 1919 on the Services of the Regiment in A. E. F. written with the unit's 'dissolution near at hand." Also laid in a letter from Major M. E. Gillette, Signal Corps to Mr. Elmer W. Johnson dated December 19, 1936 related to Signal Corps photograph SC 32040 depicting a barber shop set up in a demolished hotel in Varennes and identifying several members of the regiment and Pvt. Elmer Johnson as the barber. The 23rd was constituted on 15 August 1917, in the National Army by the War Department General Order 108, as the 23d Engineer Regiment (Road). In spite of the problems faced by the War Department and the Corps of Engineers since the declaration of war in the previous April, it took just three weeks to gather a nucleus of men and activate the 23d Engineers on 5 September 1917 at Camp Meade, Maryland. There they began their training. Very little has been recorded of these early days of the 23d Engineers except the terse entries in Army Records. The 23rd Engineers began deploying to France in November 1917, and served in support of various allied actions, earning for itself the title "The Road Builders of the AEF." Based upon the written histories of other units in the same sections, we know that the 23rd Engineers contended successfully with building and maintaining highways destroyed by shell fire, areas contaminated by chemical warfare that had to be rehabilitated in order to be used by the support troops, and as in any war, the enemy of all armies, mud. The degree of success of the unit is measured by their nickname and earning three campaign streamers: Lorraine, Saint Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne. From the day of surrender of the Germany Army until June 1919, the 23rd Engineers were engaged in the standard after action (post hostilities) missions of clean up and repair. In that month of June, the unit was returned to the United States. The regiment was demobilized in June 1919. Fair [May be worth considering rebinding and reattaching folding plate].

Original antique World War One poster - One of the Thousand YMCA Girls in France United War Work Campaign November 11th to 18th - featuring a great design by the American illustrator and portrait painter Neysa McMein (Neysa Moran McMein; 1888-1949) of a lady wearing YMCA uniform with a branded hat and cape, holding out books and a mug of steaming hot drink for the soldiers who need help, standing in front of the bold red and blue YMCA triangle logo in the background with the stylised lettering on the sides. The United War Work Campaign was set up by seven NGO charities to fundraise and support the American troops fighting in WWI; although the war ended in November 1918, many servicemen were only able to return home in 1919. The Young Men's Christian Association YMCA was founded in 1844; the YMCA Women's Auxiliary was formed at the start of WWI in 1914 to help with their fundraising efforts and provide morale and comfort as part of the YMCA's welfare effort at military bases.
