McInerney's third novel follows Alison Poole, a fast-living Columbia dropout in 1980s Manhattan, a character who later reappeared in his novel "Brightness Falls" (1992) and in Bret Easton Ellis's "American Psycho" (1991) and "Glamorama" (1998). McInery based Poole on Lisa Druck, a New York socialite and competitive equestrian who later became known as Rielle Hunter. McInerney has publicly acknowledged in interviews, including with New York Magazine, that Poole was modeled on Druck during their 1980s relationship. McInerney dated Druck in the 1980s. She later became known as Rielle Hunter, the woman involved in the scandal with U.S. Senator John Edwards. Following widespread media coverage during the John Edwards scandal, the connection between Druck and Alison Poole was reported by major outlets including The New York Times, Slate, and Vanity Fair. THE STORY OF MY LIFE followed his breakout debut "Bright Lights, Big City" and the novel "Ransom". SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page--the author's name only, with no other marks or writing.
