Map. Lithograph. Measures 30 1/2" x 11 3/8" This map of the eastern seaboard of the United States extends from Nova Scotia to the Florida Keys, showing the migration routes of shad. The America shad are herring-like fish with a highly migratory life cycle, moving from their winter range in the mid-Atlantic to their summer range in the Bay of Fundy. They spend most of their lives in the ocean, and after 3-5 years at sea, return in spring to spawn in the freshwater rivers of their birth. . The map features three distinct curve lines showing the present limits of migration of the shad as determined by obstructions in the rivers, the natural limit of their migration before the erection of dams, and the extension of the natural limits that may be obtained by overcoming cams and natural obstructions. Published in "The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States", 1884 - an extensive geographical review of fishing communities and the fishing industry in 1880 - this map was prepared by Colonal McDonald, and drawn by C.E. Gorham. In very good condition. Very minor toning at edge of paper, not affecting the image. Fold lines as issued.
