In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition, First Printing. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth, stamped in white on spine and front cover; page edges untrimmed; top edge gilt; [1-8] 1-459 [460-464: blank] First Printing, earliest state on laid-watermarked paper with errors on page 150, 334, and 401; in first binding, with publisher's imprint in all caps at base of spine. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with a darkened spine. George Barr McCutcheon's first book, the opening volume of his Graustark series of fantasy romances, became one of the early blockbusters of the 20th century, selling over 100,000 copies in its first year. It is also listed as one of the Merle Johnson 'High Spots of American Literature.' McCutcheon's work was so popular that, alongside Anthony Hope, author of The Prisoner of Zenda, he helped create a new genre now known as the Graustarkian novel. This genre, a product of a more innocent era, envisioned the Balkans as a setting for adventurous romances in fictional kingdoms. It offered a stage where American adventurers could find themselves swept into a whirlwind of intrigue, kidnappings, daring escapes, and the precarious fate of royal thrones.
