Born on the Isle of Man, McCombe would later achieve distinction as a leading photographer for Life, but this early work already reveals the defining qualities of his career: a rare synthesis of documentary immediacy and profound human sensitivity. His photographs extend beyond the recording of military events, offering instead intimate observations of individuals caught within history's most violent upheaval. The narrative opens in Normandy in 1944, following Allied forces through ruined towns and scarred landscapes.
