Among the many portraits of Arctic explorers of the period by Pearce the majority were this half size portrait, while four were the larger three quarter length with an Arctic scene in the background. McClintock portrait was done twice, the half portrait in 1856 and the larger in 1859. "It is clear that Pearse's portraits constitute a primary source of the greatest importance. The accuracy of his work is attested to by the contemporary naval biographer W.R. O'Bynre and they enable a clear impression to be gained of the personalities being dealt with. .
