Cloth. Zustand: Very good. First Edition. Quarto, [26 plates and maps]. Publisher's green cloth, stamped in blind on cover. Yellow endpapers. Wear to cloth at the spine, hinges sold, but starting. Light toning to plates, some wear along edges of maps and plates. This work is complete with 26 plates, maps and letterpress references. Maps all in near fine condition, bright illustrations, hand-colored battle installations and troop movements. All maps fold-out. This work is from the personal library of General George B. McClellan, with his armoral bookplate on the front endpaper and signed by him on the title page. While studying the military campaigns of Marlborough in 1860, McClellan wrote: ".the old profession stirs my blood & delights me more than any other pursuit.it is war on a large scale that interests me." (Letter to Mary Ellen Marcy, Jan. 25, 1860) George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was accepted at the United States Military Academy in 1842, at the age of 15. As a student, he was focused on the history of warfare, with a "growing personal libary that already numbered several hundred volumes." McClellan continued his studies after graduating second in his class from West Point, expanding his library to over 500 volumes, focusing on the campaigns of "Caesar, Marlborough, and Frederick the Great." Upon his death in 1885, the majority of his library was bequeathed to his children and the Library of Congress. This is one of a handful of volumes in private collections. From the personal library of General George B. McClellan, the Atlas To The Memoirs of John Duke of Marlborough, published in 1848. (illustrator). Signed.

Pamphlet. Zustand: Good +. 8 p. 23 cm. B&w portrait drawing of McClellan. Original grey wrappers with ink inscription on front "To the voting millions of the US. McClellan Letter of Acceptance 1864." A few faint pencil notes, small tears, chipped bottom front corner, a bit of discolouration and soiling. Pages have a few tiny spots and pencil marks. General George B. McClellan of New Jersey (1826-85) was the Democratic nominee for president in the 1864 US election, his running mate being George H. Pendleton of Ohio. McClellan supported the continuation of the Civil War and the restoration of the Union, although the Democratic party platform was opposed to that position. The platform was written by Copperhead Thomas H. Seymour, a radical peace democrat who favoured an end to hostilities without securing Union victory. Seymour and McClellan vied for the party nomination, Seymour unsuccessfully. The effectiveness of the Democratic campaign was damaged when McClellan repudiated his party's platform which promised an end to the war and peace negotiations with the Confederacy. Lincoln was reelected in 1864, and the Democratic nominee's lack of support for the party platform may be partly why. This political pamphlet contains Gen. McClellan's letter of acceptance of the nomination from the National Democratic Convention but also contains some quotations from his correspondence with others to show his consistency on political questions. Afterwards there is a series of quotes from Lincoln advocating the right of secession, his lack of interest in stopping slavery, the emancipation declaration, etc. designed to show a lack of consistency in Lincoln's statements. Also quote from Hon. Reverdy Johnson, Republican Senator who disparages Lincoln and praises McClellan. Comments from southern newspapers (Richmond Enquirer, Mobile Register, etc.) suggest McClellan is a far more dangerous man for the Southern cause. Finally, pro-McClellan speech from Hon. James Guthrie in New Albany, Indiana, letter from Ex-President Millard Fillmore expressing his unhappiness with Lincoln's administration, letters from S. P. Chase, Senator L. Chandler of Michigan, and Hon. John Van Buren. Fascinating piece of Civil War-era political propaganda.
