In den WarenkorbBrown Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1934. First edition. [xiii], 353pp, a frontispiece, 7 other black and white illustrations, and 5 maps. Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979) was an Anglo-French painter. He is often known as "The last of the Post Impressionists" and was one of the great artists of his generation. During the First World War, Maze met Winston Churchill in the trenches and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship. At the outbreak of the WWI Maze attempted to join the French army but was deemed unfit. He then offered his services to the British and became an interpreter with the British cavalry regiment, the Royal Scots Greys. During the retreat from Mons, Maze became separated from the Royal Scots and narrowly avoided being captured by the Germans but was taken prisoner by a British unit. His position with the Royal Scots Greys was unofficial and his lack of documentation and his odd uniform led the British to think he was a spy, and was sentenced to death. On his way to face the firing squad, Maze was recognised by an officer from the Royal Scots Greys who happened to be passing and who quickly secured his release. He joined the staff of General Hubert Gough, where he undertook reconnaissance work to produce accurate drawings of enemy positions and other military objectives. In this book Maze writes of his experiences of the action that he saw on the Western Front. There is an introductions by Winston S. Churchill. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with blue titling and blue, white, and red stripes. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and a small white stain near the top corner of the rear board. The spine ends are bumped with a little bit of damage to the cloth and there is a split in the cloth of about 3/4" on the bottom and a split of about 1" on the top of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with the following inscription from the author on the half-title page: "To a brother "Grey", To a brother "brush", To a good friend - Paul Maze - 1947". The front free endpaper has been signed 'Haig'. From the library of Dawyck Haig RSA (the 2nd Earl Haig) Haig being the brother 'Grey', 'brush', friend referred to in the inscription. Inscribed and Signed by the au.
