There are already many guides to Shakespeare, from the scholarly to the simplistic. The book found its way into the hands of people who, like me, had once been intimidated by Shakespeare's language.That encouragement changed my plans. I had intended to stop at twenty sonnets. But readers kept asking: What about the rest When will you explain Sonnet 33 Will you cover the betrayal sequence So I went back to work.This volume - containing Sonnets 1 through 40 - is the result of that labour. It includes everything from the first edition (revised and slightly polished) plus detailed explanations of the next twenty sonnets. You will find the same structure: difficult words with simple synonyms, plain-English line-by-line meanings, literary explanations, deep thematic analysis, and connections to earlier sonnets. I have also kept the personal commentary section that many readers told me they valued - the place where I stop being an explainer and simply respond to the poems as a reader and a lover of Shakespeare.Forty sonnets is not the whole sequence. But it is a substantial journey.
