April 2], 1743 July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father and the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was the nation's first U.S. secretary of state under George Washington and then the nation's second vice president under John Adams. Jefferson was a leading proponent of democracy, republicanism, and natural rights, and he produced formative documents and decisions at the state, national, and international levels. Bernard Mayo was a Professor of History at the University of Virginia. Bernard Mayo he earned bachelor's and master's degrees at George Washington University and a doctorate in history at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He taught at George Washington, Georgetown and American universities before joining the University of Virginia faculty.Prof. Mayo began his career at U-Va. in 1940, and was named professor emeritus when he retired in 1972. The course for which he was best known was "Representative Americans," a history of 19th century America based on the lives of interesting personages of that time. His publications included "Henry Clay, Spokesman of the New West," published in 1937, and "Jefferson Himself: A Personal Narrative of a Many-Sided American," first published in 1942 and reissued in 1976.
