This collection of essays was originally planned as a sixtieth-birthhday tribute to John Butt, formerly Regius Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature in the University of Edinburgh. When he did not survive his sixtieth birthday, it was decided to carry on with the volume at a slower pace and make it the finest possible tribute to his memory. The twenty-three essays cover the range of English fiction from Congeve's early Incognita (1692) to Rayner Heppenstall's The Connecting Door and The Woodshed (1962). 486 pp.
