La principal aportación a esta nueva edición ?que se abre con un pequeño poema de la cineasta de 1941?, es el diario de rodaje de la película The Private Life of a Cat (1946), dirigida por Alexander Hammid y concebida por Deren; se incluyen asimismo su declaración de principios completa, los programas de mano de las presentaciones de sus películas también completos, y algunas ampliaciones de los apuntes finales en torno a diversos temas, como el referido a la poesía y el cine, extraído de su intervención en el simposio ?La poesía y el cine? de 1953 en el que participaron también Dylan Thomas, Arthur Miller, Parker Tyler y Willard Maas. Figura controvertida donde las haya, Maya Deren (Kiev 1917-Nueva York 1961) fue una trabajadora incansable desde su más temprana juventud. Fue escritora de prosa, poesía y ensayos políticos, y una apasionada dela danza y de la fotografía; pero, ante todo, fue una cineasta (?amateur?, como a ella le gustaba decir, en el sentido de ?amante?) que tuvo un modo particular de entender el cine. Defensora a ultranza del medio cinematográfico como forma de arte, Deren nunca cejó en su empeño de buscar el lenguaje propio y único de este arte del tiempo y del espacio, ni de luchar por su independencia del resto de las artes. Maya Deren ha sido considerada, además, madre de lo que, en aquel momento, el crítico John Martin denominó Choreocinema y que podemos traducir como Coreocine forma precursora de la Videodanza-. A pesar de que, por diferentes motivos, la figura y la obra de Maya Deren han permanecido, injustamente, durante años en la sombra, su labor y su herencia, tanto creativas como teóricas, han influenciado ?y lo siguen haciendo- a multitud de artistas; y su manera de trabajar contribuyó, en gran medida, a la apertura de nuevos cauces de producción y distribución de la obra artística audiovisual. Deren pertenece al tipo de cineastas y artistas que elaboraron toda una teoría sobre su propio arte de un modo creativo y analítico al mismo tiempo, siendo demiurga de una poética y teoría del cine propias.
