Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. The author, Max Wilhelm Carl Weber (1852-1937) is not of course to be confused with the sociologist Max Weber. Though born in Germany he was most closely associated with the University of Amsterdam where he became Professor of Zoology, he undertook field expeditions to the Barents Sea and, more extensively, the Ducth East Indies (notably the Siboga Expedition of 1899-1900). This was his major work, the 1st edition being 1904, and 'remained a standard text on the systematics and anatomy of mammals through much of the twentieth century '. E-68; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Two copies of Max Weber's very rare 1877 debut dissertation, submitted to the University of Bonn to pursue a doctorate in natural sciences, examines in detail the eye structures of native lizards. - Only 1 copy is registered in WorldCat (Artis Library, University of Amsterdam). - Set of two copies in total (the copy described above with a grey pencil note on the cover "2a (proef[.?] goed papier"), and another copy printed on somewhat thinner paper (without a cover), with a pencil note on the cover "2a (proef[.?] minder papier." - These appear to be two printings of the rare dissertation on different paper. Presumably, both are proofs, but we cannot be certain. -- Max Wilhelm Carl Weber (1852-1937) was an influential German-Dutch zoologist and professor at the University of Amsterdam, best known for his groundbreaking research on the zoological geography of the Indonesian Archipelago (the Weber Line) and the Siboga Expedition (1899-1900).
