Se trata de un diálogo de dos intimidades, dos islas que en esa conversación se completan y hacen realidad aquellos versos de John Donne: «Ningún hombre es una isla, algo completo en sí mismo; todo hombre es un fragmento del continente». Los treinta y tres dibujos de Neumann llegaron a la casa de Nooteboom en Menorca, y allí comenzó un proceso de escritura en el que la realidad, los recuerdos, mitología e historia, la infancia y un profundo proceso de indagación sobre el laberinto de la identidad desembocaron en estos treinta y tres poemas en prosa. Tanto los dibujos como los textos participan de esa voluntad de exploración de la identidad y sus metamorfosis, desde su zona más luminosa hasta sus habitaciones más oscuras, una búsqueda que en el diálogo traspasa las fronteras de la isla convocando vivos y muertos, luces y sombras, paisajes de interior e inabarcables exteriores, seres animales y seres humanos. Un libro singular, como lo es el itinerario poético y narrativo de Cees Nooteboom, fundado en su infinita curiosidad y su permanente indagación sobre lo extranjero frente a la identidad institucionalizada. Cees Nooteboom (La Haya, 1933) es uno de los escritores contemporáneos más versátiles y prodigiosos. Situado al margen de cualquier historiografía literaria de carácter nacional, no es sin embargo difícil seguir sus pasos en la gran tradición occidental del observador en los márgenes: ese que mira, cuestiona, admira y relata desde el ejercicio de libertad que le otorga esa mirada de extrarradio, «un romántico con ironía y sin ella, un poeta filósofo que no se deja cegar por las filosofías», en palabras de R. Safranski. Conocido en España sobre todo por sus novelas, ensayos y libros de viajes ?entre los que cabe destacar El desvío a Santiago (1992), El día de todas las almas (1998), Tumbas de poetas y pensadores (2007) o Zurbarán, el pintor del misticismo (2011)?, en esta ocasión Calambur tiene la satisfacción de poner en contacto al público español con su poesía. Max Neumann (Saarbrüken, Alemania, 1949) vive y trabaja en Berlín. Artista con un vocabulario propio y en permanente metamorfosis, ha realizado exposiciones individuales en Europa, Norteamérica y Japón. Sobre su obra ha escrito Joachim Sartorius: «Neumann no cree en una percepción extrasensorial, pero cree en las invenciones de la imaginación, creaciones lúdicas o, en las piezas oscuras, encarnaciones de obsesiones y energías compulsivas.
