Wraps. Zustand: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 11, [1] pages plus covers. Footnotes. Tables. Formulae, Illustrations. Format is approximately 9 inches by 11.5 inches. Max Michael Munk (October 22, 1890 - June 3, 1986) was a German aerospace engineer who worked for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in the 1920s and made contributions to the design of airfoils. Munk began work at NACA in 1920 and proposed the new Variable Density Tunnel (VDT) which went into operation in 1922. After World War I, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics brought Munk to the United States. President Wilson signed orders allowing Munk to come to the United States and work in government. These orders were required since Germany was a recent enemy and Munk had worked briefly for the German Navy. Munk published more than 40 articles with NACA. Munk is best known for his development of thin airfoil theory, a means of modeling the behavior of airfoils by separating the "mean camber line" and their varying thickness. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) was a U.S. federal agency founded on March 3, 1915, to undertake, promote, and institutionalize aeronautical research. On October 1, 1958, the agency was dissolved, and its assets and personnel transferred to the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Among other advancements, NACA research and development produced the NACA duct, a type of air intake used in modern automotive applications, the NACA cowling, and several series of NACA airfoils which are still used in aircraft manufacturing. During World War II, NACA was described as "The Force Behind Our Air Supremacy" due to its key role in producing working superchargers for high altitude bombers, and for producing the laminar wing profiles for the North American P-51 Mustang. NACA conducted the key compressibility research that enabled the Bell X-1 to break the sound barrier.

31pp. Original printed self-wrappers. From the library of Theodore von Karman (1881-1963), with his stamp and docketing on the front wrapper. Munk is best known for his linear theory of aerodynamics, which greatly simplifies airfoil calculations; and his variable-density wind tunnel (1923), constructed while Munk was working for the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (precursor of NASA).
