Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the book:-This is part V of the Sacred Books of the East Pahlavi Texts translation. It is the shortest one in the series, about half of most other SBE volumes. SBE 47 contains translations of a number of very late Zoroastrian texts, some prophetic in nature, others providing clues to the chronology of the religion. As such, the texts here, the Dinkard and Selections of Zad-Sparam, make interesting reading. They will be of use both to scholars looking for information about the development of Zoroastrianism, and those looking for non-traditional books of prophecy. West concludes that the traditional date of the birth of Zoroaster corresponds to 660 [BC]; more recently, 628 [BC] has been proposed, so the former date probably isn't so far off. He also computes the timetable of Zoroastrian prophecy: don't get too excited, though, the end of the world isn't until 2398, so we still have about four centuries left. About the Author:-Friedrich Max Müller (1823 1900) was a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic disciplines of Indian studies and religious studies ('science of religion', German: Religionswissenschaft). Müller wrote both scholarly and popular works on the subject of Indology. The Sacred Books of the East, a 50-volume set of English translations, was prepared under his direction. Edward William West (1824-1905), usually styled E. W. West, was a scholarly English engineer, orientalist, and translator of Zoroastrian texts. He was educated at King's College London. He prepared five volumes of Pahlavi texts (the Marvels of Zoroastrianism) for Prof. Max Müller's monumental Sacred Books of the East series, published from the years 1880 to 1897. The Title 'The Sacred Books of the East (PAHLAVI TEXTS, PART-V: MARVELS OF ZOROASTRIANISM) written/authored/edited by F. MAX MULLER, E. W. WEST', published in the year 2021. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the book:-The Pahlavi texts selected for translation in this volume are distinguished from all others by the peculiarity that both the name and station of their author and the time in which he lived are distinctly recorded. His name, Manuskihar, son of Yudan-Yim (or Gusndam), is mentioned in each of the headings and colophons to the Dadistan-i Dinik and the three Epistles attributed to him. The manuscripts containing the writings manuskihar are of two classes one represented in Europe by the codex No. 35 of the collection of Avesta and Pahlavi manuscripts in the university library at Kopenhagen the other represented by No.14 of the Haug collection of similar manuscripts are called K35 and M14, respectively in this volume. About the Book:-This literature was contained in twenty-one Nasks or treatises named either from the nature of their contents or from their initial words and each having one of the twenty one words of the Ahunavair attached to it as a kind of artificial reminder of their proper order and number while enumerating them. Very brief statements of the contents of each Nask have also been accessible in manuscripts of the Persian rivayats such as those translated in pp. 419-438 of this volume. And the existence of a much longer account of the Nasks in the Dinkard was ascertained by Haug who Published some extracts from it in 1870, when describing several of the Nasks in the Index to the Pahlavi Pazand Glossary. The term ' Pahlavi,' in its widest extent, is applied to all the varying forms of the mediaeval Persian language, from the time when the grammatical inflexions of ancient Persian were dropped, till the period when the modern alphabet was invented, and the language became corrupted into modern Persian by the adoption of numerous Arabic words and phrases. Some traces of Pahlavi words and phrases, written in old Semitic characters, have been found in the legends of coins struck by certain kings of Persian provinces, subordinate to the Greek successors of Alexander, as early as the third century B.
