Three-Quarter Leather. Zustand: Very Good. Octavo. (168 pages). Spine gilded. Very good, binding slightly worn, some pages detached, a few missing. Very Early Autograph "Class-book" that belonged to a student named Edgar B. Day (born in Catskill, New York in 1803), with more than 125 signatures, quotes, notes, contributions and…inscriptions by fellow classmates (61 from Class of 1824), and from classes immediately following his (56 from Classes of 1825, 1826 and 1827). Day wrote various notes in the Album during his studies, and also later in relation to the signers (date and cause of death, occupations, and other personal notes related to them). Among Day's classmates was SAMUEL AUGUSTUS MAVERICK (1803-1870), the legendary Texas lawyer, Mayor of San Antonio and land baron who was an original signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He belonged to the Class of 1825, but he wrote a Shakespeare quote and produced a long and beautiful original, heartfelt and poetic text about friendship on a whole page in Day's Yearbook. Signed, dated July 1824, Pendleton, South Carolina. Obviously, Maverick befriended and appreciated Day. With his fiercely independent streak, Maverick is also responsible for inspiring the creation of the word "Maverick"! In additon to Maverick, some signers, among others, include Ashbel Smith (Texas Patriot, Surgeon General, Texas Revolutionary Army), John J. Abernethy (Surgeon General of the Army), Origen S. Seymour (Politician and Judge), Richard F. Cleveland (Father of President Grover Cleveland), George W. Perkins (Abolitionist active in the Underground Railroad), Elias W. Leavenworth (Mayor of Syracuse and Congressman from N.Y.) and George Goodyear (Clergyman). List of names available on request. Also present in this Yearbook is a "List of Students at Litchfield" when Day was there from February 22nd 1826 to May 8th 1827. Day studied Law and was admitted to the Court in 1827. He said later that "his life has been, on the whole, a happy and prosperous one". Founded in 1701, now Yale University, is one of the oldest universities in United States. THIS AUTOGRAPH ALBUM IS TRULY A TEXAS MAVERICK! A wonderful piece of Americana and of course of Yale history. Signed. Manuscript.
