POURSUIVI EN ANGLETERRE POUR ATTAQUE CONTRE LA CONSTITUTION In-8° (217 x 140 mm), [2] ff. - xx pp. - 509 pp., plein veau estampé sur les plats d'un quadrillage à la façon "cuir de russie", dos à 5 faux-nerfs orné, encadrements de filets et roulettes sur les plats, roulette intérieure, tranches marbrées (reliure anglaise de l'époque). Édition originale (on connaît des exemplaires parus à la même date à l'adresse de Dulau & co) de cet ouvrage qui fit scandale en Angleterre. Ex-dono gratté en haut du titre : « Monsieur Le Bosy. [?] / de la part de son très humble / & dévoué serviteur / [signature illisible] ». Royaliste dévoué, l'économiste grenoblois Maurice Rubichon émigre à Londres à la Révolution. Là, offusqué par la multiplication des réquisitoires contre l'Espagne, il entreprend la rédaction de De l'Angleterre, critique enflammée du gouvernement, de la politique et du système judiciaire de la Grande-Bretagne. Comparant l'Angleterre à la France des Bourbons, Rubichon avance que toutes les « libertés » dont jouissent les anglais sont les vestiges d'institutions catholiques, tandis que le pays doit ses malheurs « aux institutions que depuis plus de cent ans la philosophie a enté sur sa constitution. » (p. ii) Rubichon s'en prend à la chambre des communes, « soit-disant partie démocratique du gouvernement anglois » (p. 6) qu'il déclare rongée par la corruption, à la chambre des pairs impotente ; il déplore l'attention portée à la manufacture au dépend de l'agriculture, à l'éducation et à la justice au détriment de la religion, et - bien qu'il soit esclavagiste - compose une critique mordante de l'administration politique et économique des colonies. L'ouvrage fait scandale en Angleterre, où Rubichon est poursuivi pour attaque contre la constitution. Il remporte son procès mais se ruine en frais judiciaires. Bien que l'ouvrage porte la mention « fin de la première partie » et qu'une suite ait été annoncée, les déboires judiciaires empêchèrent l'auteur de publier la seconde partie sous cette forme originale. Le présent exemplaire, dans une belle et fraîche reliure anglaise strictement de l'époque, est parfaitement complet en un volume tel que paru. Une première édition française paraît chez Lefebvre et Le Normant en 1815 sous le titre de « nouvelle édition », reproduisant l'ouvrage tel quel. L'ouvrage est réédité en 1816 dans la même configuration. Ce n'est qu'en 1817 que Lefebvre et Le Normant publie une édition augmentée présentée comme « tome premier », suivie en 1819 d'un « tome second » contenant enfin la suite du travail de Rubichon. Pour disposer de l'oeuvre complète de l'auteur, il convient donc de se procurer aussi l'édition augmentée de 1817-1819 en deux volumes. Rubichon regagne la France en 1814, puis aux Cent jours fuit en Espagne et en Italie. Il y compose une série d'études sur les enquêtes réalisées par le gouvernement anglais sur la situation économique en Grande-Bretagne. Il fera également paraître De l'agriculture en France, ouvrage dans lequel il se désespère de l'extinction du système féodal. Provenance : Famille Doulcet au Château du Vigneux (Veauches). Tampon humide "DOULCET / LE VIGNEUX" sur la première garde blanche. Charles Cholat fit construire le Château du Vigneux en 1883. Sa fille Hélène (1908-1990), épouse du baron Pierre Doulcet, hérita de la propriété. Bibliographie : Quérard VIII, 275.
