First edition of this scarce contemporary account of the judicial proceedings against Robert Matthews, the self-proclaimed prophet better known as "Prophet Matthias," whose sensational rise and fall became one of the defining religious and criminal scandals of the Jacksonian era. The collapse of Matthews's utopian "Kingdom" generated widespread newspaper coverage and an extensive pamphlet literature, illuminating the volatile intersection of evangelical revivalism, popular print culture, class tensions, and sensational criminal litigation in antebellum America. The pamphlet reports the proceedings arising from Matthews's alleged fraudulent acquisition of property from Benjamin H. Folger and reflects the broader controversy surrounding the death of the wealthy merchant Elijah Pierson, whose association with Matthews fueled intense public fascination. Although Isabella Baumfree-later celebrated as Sojourner Truth-is not named in this pamphlet, she lived and worked within Matthews's household during these events, making this an important contemporary document for one of the formative episodes of her early life. Truth devoted one of the most substantial sections of her Narrative of Sojourner Truth (1850) to her experiences with Matthews, recounting her introduction to the self-styled prophet, the disintegration of the commune, and the accusations that followed. After leaving the household, she successfully brought a slander action against one of her white accusers, an extraordinarily rare legal victory for a Black woman in antebellum America.
