Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Letters to an Infidel' is a compelling work of Christian apologetics designed to engage with the philosophical and theological challenges of the modern era. Written by Reverend Matthew J. W. Smith, this volume takes the form of a series of addressed communications intended to bridge the gap between traditional religious conviction and the skeptical perspective of the secular world. The work serves as a reasoned defense of the Catholic faith, systematically addressing common objections to theism and organized religion with clarity and intellectual rigor.Throughout the text, Smith explores the fundamental pillars of belief, including the existence of a higher power, the historical validity of the Christian message, and the necessity of moral order. By employing both logic and pastoral insight, the author attempts to demonstrate that faith is not merely a matter of sentiment but is supported by a robust intellectual framework. 'Letters to an Infidel' offers a significant glimpse into early twentieth-century religious discourse, emphasizing the enduring dialogue between reason and revelation. It is an essential read for those interested in the history of theological debate and the evolution of modern religious defense in an increasingly pluralistic society. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Practical Ascetics' by Matthew J. W. Smith is a comprehensive guide to the spiritual life, designed to make the rigorous principles of Christian asceticism accessible to a broader audience. The work focuses on the integration of self-discipline, prayer, and moral development into the routine of daily life, arguing that the pursuit of holiness is not reserved solely for those in monastic orders but is a calling for all faithful individuals. The text explores various methods for cultivating virtue and overcoming the spiritual lethargy that often hinders personal growth. Smith provides clear, actionable advice on how to practice temperance, humility, and constant prayer in a world filled with distractions. By bridging the gap between complex theological concepts and practical application, the book serves as a roadmap for anyone seeking to deepen their religious commitment and achieve a more disciplined internal life.Drawing upon centuries of Catholic tradition while addressing the challenges of the early 20th century, 'Practical Ascetics' remains a significant historical and spiritual document. It emphasizes the transformative power of small, consistent sacrifices and the enduring value of a life dedicated to spiritual excellence and divine service. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (1902-1971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America. Other highlights include inscriptions from John Betjeman, Christopher Morley, E.C. Bentley, A.P. Herbert, David McCord, William Plumer Fowler, and Holger Lundbergh, among others-each evidencing Nash's influence and the esteem in which he was held across literary and cultural circles in the U.S. and the U.K. O.…
