Als Komponist und Theaterkapellmeister hatte Matthes wichtige Erfahrungen gesammelt, die ihn zu einem profunden Fachurteil befähigten. Matthes' stete Aufmerksamkeit galt dem geistigen Erbe Richard Wagners und den Bayreuther Festspielen. In seinem Nachlaß fand sich das vollständig ausgearbeitete Manuskript des vorliegenden Buches. Matthes erzählt kurzweilig Geschichte(n), Anekdoten und Entwicklungen aus der Ära von Cosima bis Wieland Wagner.
