Palmieri in questa sua opera - scritta sotto forma di un dialogo tra Luigi Guicciardini, Francesco Sacchetti e Agnolo Pandolfini - illustra le qualità del cittadino modello secondo i classici canoni dell umanesimo. Alla base della concezione dell A. vi sono gli ideali della Roma repubblicana e della Grecia periclea: per lui ogni forma di tirannia è contraria alla retta formazione dell'individuo, dal momento che il bene comune deve essere posto a fondamento di ogni governo. Il suo cittadino perfetto, colto ed eclettico, ha delle caratteristiche molto simili a quelle del cortegiano del Castiglione. Essenza e scopo della vita umana sono i doveri civili e sociali. Ovviamente il processo per il quale un bambino diventa un cittadino non puo' essere lasciato al caso. Palmieri indica infatti i doveri, le responsabilità e gli insegnamenti adatti ad ogni età della vita. La filosofia morale sarà alla base della virtù, l'esperienza nel campo delle arti fornirà l'istruzione (cfr. G.M.
