Migration in the history of mankind is a phenomenon of great interest to sociologists anthropologists economists and historians. This book deals with various forms of migration in South India with focus on rural to rural migration. Peasant migration from Travancore to the British Malabar started in the 1920s is a typical case of migration to rural areas in search of cultivable lands. Slowly they established factories, fortresses and other commercial establishments in places allotted to them by the local rulers, while their missionary zeal brought them i…n contact with people of the Malabar Coast, both non-Christians as well as St. Thomas Christians. The economic, social and cultural legacy of the Portuguese interaction with the Malabar Coast is clearly discernible in the geographic segment now known as Kerala. Once the Portuguese obtained territorial possessions outside the Malabar Coast, they commenced to establish political control and introduced European administrative apparatus in Asia. However, these colonies could not be kept under the Portuguese sway forever. They made attempts to liberate themselves from the colonial authority of the Portuguese finally leading to their liberation. During the Portuguese presence in India for over 450 years, innumerable social transformations took place. This book is an attempt to explore the themes related to economy, trade, commercial ventures, urbanization, socio-cultural interactions as well as the various stages of movements connected with the liberation of Portuguese settlements in India.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: An ardent academician, K. S. Mathew has several degrees in his credit including a Doctorate in IndoPortuguese History for which he worked two years in Portugal as the fellow of the International Service of Gulbenkian Foundation. Following his service as the Reader in the Dept. of History, M S University of Baroda, he was appointed head of the Department of History at the Central University of Hyderabad and later at the Pondicherry Central University. The University Grants Commission selected him as an Eminent Professor and honoured him with the National Fellowship award. He was one of the founder members of Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) and a member of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). He also served as visiting Fellow/Professor, Wisconsin University, USA, under Fulbright Fellowship; University of Ottawa, Canada; Institute d' Historie, Universite Michel de Montaigne BordeauxIII, DAAD(Germany) at Heidelberg University and Maison de Sciences de I' Homme, Paris. In 2003, he founded Institute for Research in Social Sciences and Humanities (IRISH), which was recognized as a research centre by Kannur University and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Dr. K. S. Mathew has guided 19 doctoral theses, completed 14 research projects and published 24 books and 105 research articles in various national and international Publications.Dr. Joshy Mathew (b. 1977) teaches in the Department of History, Pazhassiraja College, Pulpally, Wayanad, Kerala. The battle of Actium waged in 31 BCE and the annexation of Egypt in 30 BCE to the Roman Empire opened up avenues for increased commercial contacts between the Roman Empire and South Asia in general and India in particular. As Pliny the Elder (c. 23-79 CE) qualifies, Muziris was the premier emporium of India. Periplus written between 80 CE and 90 CE locates Muziris on the South-Western coast of India, South of Tyndis and north of Nelcynda and Becare in the Kingdom of Cerabothara on the Malabar coast. The reference in the Tamil Sangam literature indicates that Muziris was situated on the banks of the river Periyar emptying itself into the Arabian Sea. The fourth century (CE) Peutingerian table also points out the location of Muziris in the lower Periyar Valley. Till the end of the 1990s Cranganore or Kodungalloor in Trichur district was identified as Muziris of course without any material evidence.
