Frontispiece, Matas Birthday Volume, The American Journal of Surgery, October, 1931, 26,7 x 19 cm. RUDOLPH MATAS (1860-1957) was born at Bonnet Carre, Sept. 12, 1860. His early childhood was divided between Barcelona and Paris. In 1877 he matriculated in the Medical Department of the University of Louisiana. At the end of his first session he won the post of resident student in the Charity Hospital of New Orleans, after a stiff examination. He was graduated in 1880, and in 1886 became Demonstrator of Anatomy, a position he held until 1894, when he was unanimously elected to the chair of surgery, a proof of his popularity with the press and the people. Matas served as editor of the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal, from 1883 to 1885; "was president of the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Society in 1886; president of the Louisiana State Medical Society in 1894, of the American Surgical Society in 1910 and of the Southern Surgical Society in 1912. He was given the degree of LL.D. by Washington University, St. Louis. Matas was most highly regarded by the members of his profession. He was a prolific writer, and has contributed many articles to various medical publications. His monograph of 350 pages, in "Keen's Surgery," on the surgery of the vascular system, is regarded as a masterpiece. He has published about 300 monographs on a wide range of subjects. During the World War I he was appointed major in the Medical Reserve Corps, and served as instructor to classes of medical officers detailed by the government for study in New Orleans hospitals. Matas has been very successful in curing arterial aneurisms by the method of intrasaccular sutures (endoaneurismorrhaphy), known as the Matas operation. He has been honored with the presidency of the American College of Surgeons.
