Il 2 agosto 1575, durante un colloquio negli appartamenti ducali di Ferrara, in presenza del duca Alfonso II e di alcuni gentiluomini, il marchese di Vignola Ercole Contrari improvvisamente morì. Di questa vicenda misteriosa e romanzesca ancora a distanza di secoli non si è potuta dare un'esauriente spiegazione. I biografi dell'epoca hanno accreditato l'ipotesi che all'origine dell'assassinio vi fosse un amore incauto per Lucrezia, sorella del duca, ma tale versione non fu la sola.
