First edition. 173pp. Christopher Massie (1880-1964) was a British novelist who incorporated his experiences of poverty, war trauma, and marginalization into some of his works. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps as a stretcher-bearer and hospital orderly in France, where he was wounded and concussed, shaping his critical views on war's futility and military discipline.After the War, he endured extreme destitution in London, working odd jobs ranging from sign-writer to reporter while living as a vagabond and occasionally residing in a workhouse. However, he persisted as a writer, receiving early support from H.G. Wells, who aided publication, and later received financial help from John Galsworthy. The present work is the story of a little boy at the age of innocence. He runs free in the sunlight of an east coast island, and here his guardian angels are a schoolmistress, and an elderly sailor who builds the model ship of his dreams. His mother inherits wealth and the family moves to London, but when this perplexing new world crashes about his ears it is to the island that he runs away. The book is bound in the original dark maroon cloth covered boards with yellow titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with a bump to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has been designed and bears an illustration by Edward Ardizzone. It is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling.
