The first Irish edition of Poems of Mr. Gray, to which are Prefixed Memoires of His Life and Writings, a scarce collection of letters, odes and epitaphs from the prolific poet Thomas Gray, compiled by William Mason. Complete in two volumes. In full contemporary calf, with raised bands and glit spine labels. Contemporary end papers, with the frontispiece missing to Volume I. Free end papers of I missing, rear free end paper of II missing. These memoirs and letters offer an insightful portrait of the poet known for his melancholy broodings and repressed protagonists, including glimpses of his own relationships, including to his mother and fellow writer Thomas Wharton, and personal thoughts which inspired his output. Despite only publishing thirteen poems within his lifetime, Gray was very popular and often considered foundational to the Romantic and Gothic literary movements which followed. The poetic works of English poet, William Mason. Two volumes, The English Garden: A Poem and Elfrida and Caractacus: Dramatic Poems with Mason's Minor Poems Part I. and Part II. Bound in the publisher's original cloth. Both works with an individual engraved title page. Mason is particularly well known for The English Garden, a long, georgic poem using the theme of the quintessential English garden as an allusion to his support of Whiggism and Anglicanism. Originally published in four parts between 1772 and 1782. This edition with notes and a commentary to The English Garden by Anglo-Irish politician and abolitionist, William Burgh, first included in the 1783 edition. This copy with the bookplate of twentieth-century British poet and academic, Vivian de Sola Pinto, to the front pastedown. De Sola Pinto published two volumes of poetry during his career; This Is My Englandand Crisis in English Poetry, 18801940. He notably appeared for the defence in the 1960 watershed obscentiy trial, brought against Penguin Books for publishing D. H. Lawrence's uncensored version ofLady Chatterley's Lover. This Christian allegory, first published in 1678, is often regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, with antecedents in a large number of Christian devotional works, detailing the soul's path to Heaven.
