In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: New. VIII-234 p. : ill., maps, plans ; 30 cm. The publication of results, undertaken on behalf of The Highways Agency, UK, of archaeological excavations and watching brief works in advance of and during the construction of a 6.3km bypass around Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire (UK). Excavation at Woodlands Roundabout Site A in 2002 revealed late Bronze Age to early Iron Age activity, on the fringes of settlement and included placed human bone and rare ‘concertina’ vessels in pits. Structures, including an unusually robust 4-poster within a pennaular gully and an oval structure may have associations with mortuary practices. This site was abandoned no later than the middle Iron Age, well before the construction of Roman Akeman Street, which lies beneath the A41, and over which Woodlands Roundabout has been constructed. The Roman road’s construction was evidenced by gravel quarries and by its probable make-up layers. Other sites reported include excavation on either side of the B489 Lower Icknield Way Site B near Buckland, in 2001 and 2002, and excavations in 2001 on former arable land at Tring Hill Site D, just within the Buckinghamshire boundary with Hertfordshire, whichproduced plough truncated remnants of late Iron Age enclosure ditches, pits and post-holes, including four-post structures.
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume is the second of two reports on archaeological excavations undertaken ahead of the eastern expansion of Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) which lies in the northern watershed region of Northamptonshire at its border with Warwickshire. The excavations, covering 178 hectares, recorded one of the most extensive Iron Age farming settlements yet discovered in the British Isles. It comprised at least five individual sites of house clusters and enclosures, spread around the rim of a shallow valley overlooking around 100 hectares of open pasture. At its peak between 400 BC and 100 BC the settlement would have contained up to 100 circular buildings. Volume 2 describes the excavations of four of these individual sites, undertaken at various times by MOLA Northampton (then Northamptonshire Archaeology) at The Lodge and Long Dole, by Foundations Archaeology at Crick Hotel, and by Cotswold Archaeology at Nortoft Lane, Kilsby. The project was managed by RPS. The site reports are followed by a wide-ranging discussion, putting the discoveries here and at Covert Farm, Crick (Volume 1) into the context of Iron Age settlement patterns and dynamics in the East Midland region.

Finely bound in half blue morocco with marbled card over boards, raised bands to spine, detailed and illustrative gilt tooling to spine with four small red in-lays, titled in gilt to spine. Edges of textblock gilt, marbled endpapers. Eight tissue-guarded, colour illustrated plates throughout including a frontispiece. Chapter head and tailpieces. Sunning to spine. Near fine. First published in 1813 by the eccentric Romantic poet Robert Southey, this extensive biography of Horatio Nelson was, at least at the time of this republication, 'the chief source from which the national imagination, or idea, of Nelson has been created' (introduction). This copy has been finely bound by Cuneo; the gilt tooling and attractive marbled boards make it a very handsome copy.

In den WarenkorbUnpaginated stapled pamphlet of 24pp, small 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage at head of spine. On the second page: 'The arrangement of this Programme has been the work of the Rev. Hugh Ross Williamson.' Programme for the day on front cover, including a talk by 'Mr Robert Speight: "Touring in Canada with Murder in the Cathedral"'. The final event, at 7pm in the Chapter House, is a performance entitled 'The Drama of our Festival years', and the text of this piece makes up 21pp of the pamphlet. This begins with these words, recited by the Archbishop of Canterbury [Geoffrey Fisher (1887-1972)]: 'The Drama of our Festival years. First, that we may remember the makers who have made these plays for us, the latest of them, Robert Gittings, will recite the tribute he has composed to those who went before him the other writers of the Canterbury Plays.' This is followed by a poetic prologue by Gittings, titled 'The Word', the twelve-lines stanzas of which are titled in the margins: Laurence Binyon, T. S. Eliot, Charles Williams, Dorothy L. Sayers, Christopher Hassall, Laurie Lee, Christopher Fry, 'The bringers of gifts in their kind', 'The betrayers of the word in modern life', 'The witness of the Word at Canterbury'. There follow long extracts from Canterbury Plays by Binyon, Eliot, Fry, Gittings, Hassall and Dorothy L. Sayers, with a final page carrying the text of a poem by John Masefield, beneath the text: 'All present are asked to join in singing the following hymn by the Poet Laureate to music written by the late Gustav Holst.' No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.
