Paperback. Zustand: Good. The Richness: Poetry about Old Age in the Twenty-First Century is anexploration of both the positive and negative experience of old age, focusing on theoften unappreciated perks. The 83-year-old author has written her experiences in easy-to-access poetry. The book is divided into six sections: "Coming Into Old Age," "Moving into theResidential Retirement Home," "Walking through Old Age," "Deepening Spirituality,""Completing Old Age," and "A Note to Caregivers." The first five sections may be read as a simple collection of poems or a kind of poetic autobiography of theauthor's journey through this stage of her life. The author wrote the poems as she livedthem. Section One, "Coming into Old Age," records initial experiences: diminishment ofphysical abilities, the appearance of major illness, and new spiritual reflections. "Movinginto the Residential Retirement Home" continues to focus on newexperiences-pleasant ones like a dining room where the servers always rememberones' name and challenging ones like the death of a spouse. The third section, "Walking through Old Age," contains poems about greater challenges along withsurprising joys. Then, "Deepening Spirituality" contains a record of the kind of sacredmoments that come to so many seniors during these years. "Completing Old Age" wasoriginally meant to be the final section of the book-the record of an elder who hastaken a long look back into a satisfied life, who sees it as the final piece of her wholeexistence. However, Aisha Sherie McGuffey, a chaplainwho works with the elderly and their caregivers, saw a few of the poems. She had beenlooking for material that could be used in teaching caregivers how their elders felt aboutmeeting the experiences of old age. She was so pleased at the effectiveness of thesepoems as teaching material that she wrote the final section, "A Note to Caregivers,"even including a sample lesson plan. Thus, the book may be simply enjoyed by anyone as entertainment, read asvalidating experiences by those who are elders, or used as a textbook in a teachingsituation.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. No One's Easy Daughter: Our Journeys of Transformation, originally conceived as a documentary record of a way of life passing from existence, developed into a mosaic, a shared memoir of thirty-nine women who 'took the veil' together as Franciscan Novices. Some are still Sisters; others followed different life paths yet remain intimately connected because of those early years spent together. These women who met in the 1950s have continued to share their spiritual development and hunger for the great meaning and mysteries of life with one another. This and their wide range of beliefs and experiences give the book its profundity. Here read various kinds of deeply lived spiritual journeys told through the intermingling of stories, poetry, and Glimpses of the Sacred. These journeys include involvements in the social, political and spiritual movements of the past 60 years. Ultimately this vibrant and inspiring narrative is the story of the Divine drawing one group of women beyond themselves into the heart of miracle and mystery. In the wondrous ways of inner alchemy, it invites readers into their own transformative journeys.…
