Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Nearly five decades of work by the beloved American critic and concrete poet best known for her flower-shaped poemsThis volume brings together a half century's worth of work by the renowned American concrete poet Mary Ellen Solt. One of the few Americans, and rare women, in the concrete poetry movement, Solt edited the influential anthology Concrete Poetry: A World View (1968), which brought her to the forefront of that movement not only as a poet but as an acclaimed critic. While Solt was justly celebrated for her suite of visual poems Flowers in Concrete (1966), much of her work has remained little known or unpublished. From her lyrical engagement with the idiom of William Carlos Williams to her masterful forays into visual and concrete poetry, this volume, assembled and edited by her daughter Susan Solt, provides an in-depth document of a truly singular writer who was at the center of some of the most daring global poetic developments of the mid-20th century. The centerpiece is the section 'Words and Spaces,' which presents Solt's concrete poems as she envisioned them: typographically precise, visually stunning and commanding on the page.Mary Ellen Solt (1920-2007) was a writer, a scholar and an early practitioner of concrete poetry. Solt authored several poetry collections including A Trilogy of Rain (1970) and The Peoplemover 1968: A Demonstration Poem (1978). Her flower poems have been exhibited internationally, most recently at the 2022 Venice Biennale and at the Getty Center in 2017.…

The Collected Poems of Mary Ellen Solt brings together nearly five decades of poetic work. Celebrated for her suite of visual poems Flowers in Concrete, much of Solt's work has remained little known or unpublished. Zustand: Fine. 92 x 92 x 23mm. Ampersand pin in navy blue box. Mary Ellen Solt. A Gold Pin for Gertrude Stein. Moschatel Press, 2018, gold ampersand pin in blue box. Unnumbered edition of 50. As seen reprinted in The Collected Poems of Mary Ellen Solt (Ed. Susan Solt, Primary Information, NYC, 2024 in the Words and Spaces section). The use of the title 'For Gertrude Stein' appears to be a homage to Gertrude Stein's phrase from her poem Sacred Emily, where it famously states "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose".In 1974, a friend of Solt's planned a magazine of concrete poetry with a group of graduate students. Each one of them contacted a poet and asked for contributions for a poetry / assembling magazine titled 590 A or: The uncool season is here (Easter 1975, Edition of 11). Contributors included Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Bernard Heidsieck, Chopin (who was furious about the request), Mary Ellen Solt, and others.Solt contributed 'A gold Pin for Gertrude Stein'. She sent a white page with the single, typed ampersand in the centre of the page, asking thatthe poem be printedon dark blue with a gold ampersand. This was how she conceived the poem, though it was included in the magazine in black and white. The magazine's editor has passed along a piece of correspondence of what Solt had to say about the importance of the work:Mary Ellen Solt to Mrs. Jackson (student of the editor), 21 November 1974: 'So far, no magazine has had the nerve to print such a minimal "poem" in this country. The poem. paystribute to Gertrude Stein's fondness for and artistry with the word "and". The ampersand shape suggests those little gold treble clefs which are sometimes given to little girls who excel in music. Ideally it should be printed on a blue background with gold ink. But these typewriter copies will have to suffice for the present.'In 2018, the editor contacted Thomas A. Clark in 2018 to create the original version Mary Ellen had envisioned. Tom, however, suggested that the poem could be taken to the next level of 'concrete', and thus, this edition of an actual pin in a blue box was born. Condition: Fine.…

First edition of this collection of international concrete poetry, "considered one of the major anthologies of the form" (New York Times). This volume explores the origins of concrete poetry in the work of experimental writers from Europe and Brazil. Mary Ellen Solt pens the comprehensive introduction in which she explores the origins of the movement. She writes, "no matter where the concrete poet stands with respect to semantics, he invariably came to concrete poetry holding the conviction that the old grammatical-syntactical structures are no longer adequate to advanced processes of thought and communication in our time." Solt's own poetry was exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Stedelijk in Amsterdam. Margalit Fox, "Poet of Words and Shapes, Dead at 86", New York Times, 3 July 2007 Quarto. Illustrations throughout, some in colour, folding plate. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in white. With dust jacket. Minor foxing to edges and outer leaves; dust jacket unclipped, rubbed, edges nicked with a couple of short closed tears and tape repairs to verso: a very good copy in like jacket.…
