Front cover with small illustrated vignettes of children doing various activities, including one depicting BASEBALL, where a batter stands poised to hit a ball, with another child sitting by, looking on, and a third in the distance, perhaps the pitcher. In GOOD condition. Moderate soiling and a few minor stains. Moderate scuffing and fading to the covers. Minor edge wear. Interior solid with moderate foxing, minor sporadic soiling and a previous owner's inscription in ink on the first endpaper.

In a half morocco binding, with gilt detailing to back strip, and marbled paper covered boards. A touch of rubbing to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally lovely. A translation into French of Elliott's Dumb Animals, this appears to be a variant to Darton, H396 which calls for a folding engraved frontispiece. Double sided advert leaf for Elliott's works bound after general title page. Each of the 4 stories has a title page, a delightful folding copper plate frontispiece, image size 118 x 160 (4½" x 6¼"), plus 2 engraved plates. Spine and corners slightly worn, a little marbled paper chipped off along board edges, rear endpaper removed, occasional very neat ink correction to error in French text, very little pencil scribble erased from a couple of margins, early inscriptions on endpapers, tiny chip to lower margin of 1 folding plate. Darton, 58, Holborn Hill, 1810, original printed paper covers, stitched, 12 x 10 cm., 30 pages, frontispiece and 5 plates (4 of which are hand-coloured. The frontispiece is included in the pagination, the plates are unpaginated), the lower 1.5 cm. of the spine is torn exposing the gatherings, slightly torn at the head of the spine, slight split along the inner edge of the front cover but holding well (see photograph), lower corner of the front cover a little creased, covers worn and a little soiled, off-setting opposite the plates, otherwise a sound and internally very clean copy. NOTE: There was an earlier edition in 1909. Size: 12 x 10 cm.

Original Wrappers. Squat 12mo, paginated to include covers. Wood engraved frontispiece and five full-page plates. Some offsetting from plates, leaves a little browned and soiled. Paper wraps are worn and rubbed. This early juvenile was first published in 1809, this is the second edition. The wood engraved covers (both upper and lower) are probably by the publisher William Darton II. This is a scarce copy of Mary Belson (Elliott)'s first work. Both William Darton senior and junior were pioneers in children's book publishing in England. Rare, COPAC locates just three copies of this edition at the BL, Cambridge and the V & A. Alderson & Oyens: Be Merry and Wise, Origins of Children's Book Publishing in England, 1650-1850, 193a.
